Extensive support for maths education from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 5, including professional development, resources, and much more.
Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) is a national maths education charity.
Our vision is that people’s lives are enhanced by maths education. We aim to achieve this by improving maths education, so that:
MEI develops maths curricula; provides accessible, high-quality professional development and resources; and, where there is a need, delivers student tuition and enrichment experiences. We deploy innovative approaches, work in collaboration with others, and inform and influence policy makers. Most of our work is in England, but we also contribute to improving maths education across the UK and internationally.
MEI manages the DfE-funded Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), which aims to increase participation in Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and improve the teaching of these level 3 maths qualifications.
Through our involvement in the leadership and management of the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM)—also a DfE-funded programme—we provide additional support for maths teaching at all levels, from early years through to post-16, and help to coordinate the national Maths Hubs network.
The AMSP provides national support for teachers and students in state-funded schools and colleges in England. Additional support is offered in areas of low social mobility so that, whatever their gender, background or location, students can choose their best post-16 maths pathway and have access to high-quality teaching.
Many of the AMSP’s activities support maths in KS3-4. They include a range of professional development for teachers of GCSE Mathematics and enrichment activities to inspire students.
A key focus is to raise awareness of Core Maths – the ideal post-GCSE qualification for students who do not choose AS/A level Mathematics. The AMSP offers extensive guidance and support to introduce Core Maths and increase uptake. It includes a comprehensive platform of teaching and learning resources and professional development for those new and experienced in teaching Core Maths.
The AMSP also provides extensive professional development and resources for AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Where a state-funded school/college in England is unable to offer AS/A level Further Mathematics, the AMSP can provide full or partial tuition to help establish independent provision.
The AMSP also provides tuition for university admission tests.
Integral provides comprehensive, high-quality support for teaching and learning AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. It helps teachers make the best use of their time, allowing them to focus on planning, teaching and reviewing students’ progress.
Integral is designed by experienced specialists to develop deep mathematical understanding. It covers the whole curriculum with thousands of teaching and learning resources, tailored to each specification. The resources are easy to use on computers and tablets and can be accessed from school or college and home.
Over 30,000 students and 6,000 teachers use Integral in the UK. Versions are also available for the Cambridge International and Edexcel International syllabuses.
As a not-for-profit, MEI ensures Integral subscription packages are very affordable, making them excellent value for money.
“The resources are well thought out and easy to navigate. Thank you for such a brilliant resource!” Maths teacher, Harris Federation
MEI has released a new suite of resources to support excellent practice in the teaching of secondary maths to all students, regardless of prior attainment. We want as many teachers as possible to be able to use them and so have set the prices very low at just £8 per unit. Further information is able on the MEI Deeper Maths web page.
MEI is delighted to be supporting Maths Week England 2020, which runs from 9-16 November. We’ll be providing several new, free resources, activities and competitions to engage students from KS2 to KS5, all linked to this great initiative. Our plans are taking shape and will be listed on this web page over the coming weeks.
Ritangle is a free competition for teams of students aged 16-18 of A level Mathematics, the International Baccalaureate and Scottish Highers (or qualifications with equivalent content), including international students. Registration opens on 4 October and the competition runs to 8 December. Details are available on the Ritangle web page.
The following video, presented by MEI’s Richard Lissaman at the WCSQM Symposium in July 2020, gives an overview of the maths teaching resources schools can access to support teachers and students.
